I think it's really cool that Tadano's special talent is 'reading the mood,' simply because of how boring it is. His special power is perception, and he's... down to do nothing with it, except maybe avoid situations where he's not wanted. He's not an active player. He's mild-mannered and forgiving and has bystander syndrome like woah. If there's one thing that Tadano is not here to do, it's rock the boat.

That makes for a pretty boring main character, right?

And yet, for Komi's sake, he keeps stepping into situations he knows to avoid—situations where he's not welcome—which both takes him out of his comfort zone and makes him useful. The writer took an innately milquetoast character and made him a badass via pairing him up with an anxious wreck of a kitten poured into a human-shaped mold.

Komi is beautiful and interesting and beloved, but she has no idea how to deal with it, even if she desperately wants to connect. Tadano has a talent for reading faces and situations, and in doing so, sees the anxious wreck under the dead stiff expression. He's even-tempered and perceptive and kind, and for someone like Komi, that makes him incredibly easy to connect with and safe to be around.

And he keeps proving that her trust in him was well-founded. He keeps encouraging her and supporting her, and she (understandably) adores him for it.

It's a really sweet love story to tell, but more to this particular point, they took the very characteristics that make mild characters 'boring' in other stories, and used them to make Tadano a badass in the 'battlefield' of this manga. And i think that's pretty awesome.
